Basic Types of Woodworking
Carving
Wood carving is a type of woodworking in which people use knives, chisels, and other hand-held wood carving tools to create figures or designs in pieces of wood. Woodcarvers make everything from duck decoys, cufflinks, and epic three-dimensional storybook scenes to furniture, home decor, and life-sized sculptures.
Woodturning
Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around an axis of rotation. Like the potter’s wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate a variety of forms limited only by the imagination of the artist or craftsperson.
MARQUETRY
The art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The technique may be applied to case furniture or even seat furniture, to decorative small objects with smooth, veneerable surfaces or to freestanding pictorial panels appreciated in their own right.
Construction
- Woodworking is a broad term that encompasses a variety of skills and techniques used to create objects or structures from wood. It often involves crafting items such as furniture, cabinets, decorative objects, and wood art. Woodworking typically focuses on the creation of finished products using a variety of tools and techniques, including carving, shaping, sanding, and finishing.

Your Basic Tools
Chisels
A chisel is a wedged hand tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge on the end of its blade, for carving or cutting a hard material (e.g. wood, stone, or metal). The tool can be used by hand, struck with a mallet, or applied with mechanical power. The handle and blade of some types of chisel are made of metal or wood with a sharp edge in it (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind).
Chiselling use involves forcing the blade into some material to cut it. The driving force may be applied by pushing by hand, or by using a mallet or hammer
Saws
The Rip Saw. A rip saw is designed specifically for cutting wood parallel to the grain.
The Crosscut Saw. As the name suggests, the crosscut saw is for cutting wood perpendicular to the grain.
The Back Saw is characterized by a stiffened rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge, which gives the saw its name. Back saws include dovetail saws, tenon saws, and miter saws, and are for fine joinery work where precision is paramount.
The Coping Saw is the artist of the saw family, with a thin blade stretched across a U-shaped frame, used for intricate and detailed work. The blade is removable, allowing you to thread it through a hole in the wood and make interior cutouts.
Hammers
Woodworkers accustomed to putting pieces together with screws and glue might not think of a hammer as an essential tool. But even if you don't drive 16d nails, here are two hammers and a mallet that will earn their keep in your shop.
While most carpenters rely on a 16- or even 20-oz. nail hammer, a lighter one, say 12 or 13 oz., often serves cabinetmakers and furnituremakers best. One like the 12-oz. claw hammer fills the bill for general woodworking use.
Misc. tools
Oilstone is a block of fine-grained stone, usually oiled, oil, for putting the final edge on certain cutting tools by abrasion.
Slipstone is basically a stone tool that is shaped to fit on the inside edge of your U-Shaped or V-Shaped gouge. A slipstone can be run along the inside edge and neatly knock off any burrs that have built up.
Adjustable wrench, also called an adjustable spanner or an adjustable crescent is a tool, which can be used to loosen or tighten a nut or bolt.
A planer is used to smooth and level the flat surfaces of a board to a consistent thickness,
A jointer is used to create a square surface on the edge of a board.

Wood Species
Mahogany
Mahogony has been a popular hardwood for furniture and woodworking since the late 1700s. The signature red-brown to blood-red color darkens over time, creating beautifully unique pieces. With a straight grain and medium texture, mahogany wood is workable, making it easy to create ornate pieces, patterns, or intricate furniture. It’s popularity and rarity make it a fairly expensive option.
ASH
Ash is a durable and popular choice for woodworking. Colors range from white to gray-brown, ash is known for its staining potential. With excellent gluing and screw and nail holding properties, ash offers woodworkers durability and flexibility. Ash is often used as a substitute for oak; however as quantities become more limited, prices are trending higher.
TEAK
Teak’s resistance to rot and moisture make it a fabulous choice for outdoor furniture and structures. Its beautiful golden-brown coloring makes it a popular choice for indoor and outdoor use. Its weather-resistance and durability ensure your projects will remain beautiful for years to come. Just keep in mind color can vary greatly, so you will want to get all your wood from the same shipment.
MAPLE
Maple is a strong, light-colored wood that absorbs shock well and resists wear. Its strength, stability, and durability make it a great option for kitchen furniture since it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Maple tends to be more affordable than other hardwood options.
CHERRY
Cherry is a classic woodworking option thanks to its workability and beautiful coloration. Ranging from pinkish-brown to red-brown, cherry offers flexibility that makes it ideal for curved or complicated furniture designs. Since cherry wood is becoming so popular, its price is rising.
WALNUT
Walnut is one of the most commonly-used furniture woods in the US thanks to its strength and coloration. Walnut pieces can express a great deal of character with colors ranging from a light brown to a rich, chocolate brown and eye-catching burls and crotches.
Wood Species
OAK
Oak is often found in two varieties: red oak and white oak. Oak is one of the most common types of wood in the world. Red oak is considered a standard wood in the flooring industry. Both varieties are strong, easy to work with, and take stains well. However, one feature of only white oak is its resistance to moisture. Therefore, white oak is a good alternative to teak when it comes to outdoor furniture.
PINE
Pine wood is very abundant in North America. Pine is incredibly easy to work with and most varieties are relatively soft, making it a top choice for woodcarving. It’s used for a variety of things. Pine finishes well, but you need to use a water- or oil-based sealer to protect it.
redwood
Redwood is naturally durable and can resist water, insects, and fungi. As the name suggests, redwood has a brownish-red hue which turns to gray when left unfinished outside. Redwood is relatively soft and easy to work with. The price and availability of redwood can vary greatly depending on how far away from California you live.
CEDAR
The most commonly known species of cedar is red cedar. Cedar wood planes and shapes easily, and features a red to violet-brown hardwood color with several knots. Red cedar wood can withstand moist environments without rotting, making it a popular choice for exterior furniture or structures. It’s also used for chests and closets as a natural insect repellent; cedar’s smell and natural oils repel insects like moths and others.
